I have a MacBook and bought a 500gb hardrive. Is there a way to make it work on mac and windows??
The harddrive is from imomega called MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive… It is now formated for Mac. If i connect it with a Pc it cant connect to it or just dont use it (i think so , because it doesnt appear something on the desktop it just says that new harddrive could be located and is would install after this the only thing you can do is to disconnect the harddrive) …
I heard somewhere that you can format it on windows format and Macs could read it than too … but does this make the harddrive slower for Mac and does TimeMachine still work?
If you format as FAT32, both machines should be able to use it. Speed is not an issue, but the big limitation of FAT32 is that the largest file it can hold is 4GB.
If you use larger files you can format with NTFS which Mac OS can mount read-only, but to write you need a special driver like Paragons NTFS for Mac OS X http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac .
You could also use PC software that can open Mac format disks like TransMac http://www.asy.com .
